The  museum was an initiative of Mr. Bulu Imam, Regional Convener of the Indian National Trust for Art & Cultural Heritage (INTACH) Hazaribagh regional Chapter. He along with his family members discovered the various Buddhist sites, megalithic sites and the rock art sites of the region.

The Sanskriti museum at Hazaribagh has been in existence for over two decades now. The display is presently housed in his personal house which used to be the Tea Garden District labour Association building at the turn of the century in about 3 acres campus and lis a listed heritage building. The Museum also has an art gallery where the world famous Khovar (marriage art) and Sohrai (harvest art) paintings of Hazaribagh, which is a continuing tradition of the rock-art of our region are displayed. The Museum displays the painted panel of the rock-art. It also displays a comprehensive collection of palaeo-neolithic stone tools of our region, and other archaeological artefacts. It displays archaeological antiquities, ethnological gallery (Birhor), crafts gallery, textile gallery, etc. 


Background


The Sanskriti Museum and art gallery of Hazaribagh is the only reference point when trying to find the archaeological basis of human evolution in Hazaribagh. This unique Museum not only showcases the archaeological and historical basis for the understanding of human evolution in Hazaribagh. But is a unique attempt to bring the cultural heritage under one roof. The Understanding of the Museum is to be made with a holistic and open mind with no prejudice. The Museum is unique and its understanding has to be equally unique in the content of the museum in this context. 

The museum has an extensive library and archives, with photographic and visual documentations to back up the exhibits in the museum. The various rock art and Buddhist sites can be viewed in slide shows in the Centers Office Computers. The library has all research papers books, magazines and newsletters, etc. related to the Museum and Art Gallery in its Resource Archives and Library.

The Sanskriti Museum and Art Gallery of Hazaribagh has the primal objective in the Protection, Preservation and Promotion of the regions archaeology, art and culture of the Hazaribagh region and its environs.
